Acorn 04:11
I can see the signs I read it in your eyes Belief in paradise At the end of your life Something’s not quite right here Did you really think With the things you’ve done That we can forgive And forget it all? I want to leave this town And leave my phone behind But there’s no wilderness No place that I’ve found to Sit in deep reflection Is there meaning in life? Do we really decide? Or are we just flotsam along for the ride? Am I like an acorn? The kind you can grow trees from Or will I just get eaten by the next one that comes along? Life just carries on Beneath this golden sun So try to be someone Before your time is done here And you’re filling up some grave and gone Am I like an acorn? The kind you can grow trees from Or will I just get eaten by the next one that comes along? I guess that we’re all hungry, searching for some answers Convinced we have the right one Well come on… pull the other one We live in different houses, inside it’s just the same though We pray at different alters, inside it’s just the same though We all have different answers, inside it’s just the same love

Tell me just a one thing That you have not been listening to him I was many things but I wasn't cruel That is not the thing that I want to do to you girl You fell into another man's arms He says he'll keep you safe from harm But will he let you be who you are Or does he try to keep you locked in a cage? Are you looking for a way to escape? This is my heart and it's broke in two And now I don't know what its running on, I feel so thin I thought we had something great but I know it's not my fate to be with you Acted hard in school, by now its growing old He's disrespecting you, you should not stand for it all You fell into another man's arms He says he'll keep you safe from harm But will he let you be who you are Or does he try to keep you locked in a cage Are you looking for a way to escape? But there's no way out Don't regret who you are, don't forget who you are Don't regret you are, don't forget it...

Game Play 04:08
GAME PLAY The beast under the bed Is knocking at your door And scratching at the window Fear is instinct to the child A shadow of the past When our lives were constant danger Game on – as if I had to tell you Play along and you'll never make it out alive Prey can run and hide and cower in the dark of night But you will end up in their sights If you don't become the hunter If you're ready or ready or not Ready or not hear they come Here they come to get you The strongest will survive Until another rises to tear your world asunder Game on – as if I had to tell you Play along and you'll never make it out alive Prey can run and hide and cower in the dark of night But you will end up in their sights If you don't become the hunter If you're ready or ready or not Ready or not hear they come Here they come to get you }x2 The cemetery's full of ordinary men who followed every order These sedentary lives, all just memories lost, like tears in the rain Take on every adversary Your luck with change eventually Game on – as if I had to tell you Play along and you'll never make it out alive Prey can run and hide and cower in the dark of night But you will end up in their sights If you don't become the hunter If you're ready or ready or not Ready or not hear they come Here they come to get you }x2

Hold On 03:28
Gotta be a way out of this box I like it here that's how I'm stuck Make us comfortable and we'll do anything Yeah, all talk is dual, you don't miss a thing Took a ride in her eyes But she wants more than you'd like to give Look at us then, so much promise there There are many thoughts, I would like to share but I can't I'm fumbling in the dark It's not like you wanted to from the start You needed encouragement oh oh oh It's not like you wanted what I want You just want to hold on to someone Look at us now, see how far we've come We don't apologise for the mess we've left behind In other peoples lives It's not like you wanted to from the start You needed encouragement ah ah ah It's not like you wanted what I want You just want to hold on to someone

Xanadu 03:06
Your life stretched in front of you You didn't know what to do Kept pickling holes and it slipped right by you I hope that we're not fictional Well if you don't get a lot of lines Just sit at the back and watch the whole time Scratching at the edges trying to get in Your life stretched out in front of you Implausible, impractical need Impossible, impossible dreams Your cards laid out in front of you But you don't know which hand to chose Only one chance and you're scared you might lose So what, I'll get my second act I still don't know what I'm for The McGuffin or the sound before applause When we are uncertain it's the end Your life stretched out in front of you Full of improbable, impractical needs Take my hand it's an olive branch I will rescue you from your practical needs We'll full ourselves up on impossible dreams Impossible dreams, impossible dreams Impossible, impossible dreams Got there and there's nothing new It's not Xanadu, it's not Xanadu Got there and there's nothing new It's not Xanadu, it's not Xanadu

You've been kept on a leash For too long Looking for the enemy You know, it's obscene The way they teach you all how to hate Not to dream Of the future But we keep coming back for more Stand up and be counted they say we need a few more like you I know you'll be disappointed Because the story's always better than the truth The less you know, they say, it's better But you can feel it inside As they're putting up the battle signs They say we'll be fine Lining up to give all that you've got How could we ever know anything else? This is our time Well I'm sorry, baby, this is really not for me Stand up and be counted Cos we need a few more like you I know you'll be disappointed Cos the story's always better than the truth Amassing forces More toy soldiers You'll come round to the right side The less you know, darling, the safer it will be for you Stand up and be counted Cos we need a few more like you I know you'll be disappointed Cos the story's always better than the truth I'm so sorry, but this is really not for me

Alone in a crowded room I don't want to be the one who's lost in the foulest of moods We all get those blues I don't know what does it to me I am trying hard to be the one you need Good company This old world has got a hell of a kick It'll put you down for the hell of it I don't know what this feeling is I don't know what this feeling is any more What I need now is a wishing machine So many dreams I did not believe could come to be Like you and me You pick me up and you dust me off, Send me back out in to the world I love and I can feel The sun upon my face again This old world has got a hell of a kick It'll put you down for the hell of it I don't know what this feeling is I don't know what this feeling is any more Winter starts and it's so romantic Always longer than you could have imagined This old world has got a hell of a kick It'll put you down for the hell of it I don't know what this feeling is I should know what that feeling is by now

Mars One 03:41
Yeah, I got picked, I'm on the mission Must confess I had not premonition at all We go for science, you watch for entertainment, Must confess it's a pretty strange situation Six months floating in space we left the whole human race But we can't leave this vessel Did you get my message? I got a feeling I left it to late to send it Now I'm a long, long way from my home You get lonely, lonely, lonely Out in deep space a mind can grow suspicious. My crew turned: it's a war of attrition Six months floating in space we left the whole human race I hope that we don't crash land Did you get my message? I got a feeling I left it to late to send it I'm a long, long way from my home Crashed the space craft, the only one left is me, If you're watching at home I hope it made good TV Far from the cities, far from the seas, I'll make this dust-ball a home for me Ooh la la la. Ooh la la la Did you get my message? I got a feeling I left it to late to send it home I'm a long, long way from my home Ooh la la la. Ooh la la la Did you get my message? I got a feeling I left it to late to send it home Now I'm never coming home

Mona 03:56

about

The Others forms my sixth collection of demo songs recorded alone at home. These songs were mostly put forward as potential Fragile Creatures songs. Most of the time they got rejected for being a bit too weird, although we did try to play a few. 'You Don't Change' was, in fact, a mainstay of the set for some time but we never recorded a studio version. This collection is called The Others because it is all the other songs, besides the ones that became Fragile Creatures tracks... although during this period there were probably also another half dozen or so songs Aaron and I recorded when co-writing.

'Hold On' is a slight re-working of '5-4/6-4' from Skeletons In The Closet. I really liked the song but felt I'd fallen short with the original demo. Looking back now I feel like the original recording had more magic, even if it was half finished. This one has properly written lyrics, where the original was half-improvised. I felt the guitars were a little too sharp and spiky, but I do quite like having multiple versions, or interpretations of songs sometimes.

The oldest track from this collection is 'Mona' which was recorded in January 2012, during the first Fragile Creatures recording sessions at The Metway. After a fruitful day in the studio I quickly fleshed this song out at home in the evening. All the others on The Others were written and recorded between 2014-2015. As usual everything was done quickly and within limitations. By this point the laptop Andy had lent me was starting to complain, so getting anything finished was a bit of a wrestling match.
