about

After putting 'From The Bedroom...' together I started to look around at other scrappy recordings I had lying around. There were things that hadn't made the cut for that album and some even older recordings: my earliest attempts at recording on my own. I kind of saw it as the B-sides from the first album, hence the title. All the tracks on 'B' were recorded between 2000 and 2004.

'Honesty' was a track I recorded with Andrew Haines in his, more technologically advanced, bedroom studio. This song was in our set for the last few Rift shows. Andy produced the track, programming the beats and synths and stuff. I did another version of this with my brother at some point slightly earlier, where I played an acoustic upright piano, but I have no idea what happened to it.

'Not For You' was written with my friend Henry Bell and had been a mainstay of the set for a band we were in called Pornography. This recording was made after guitarist James Rippingale and I had left the band. Rip loved the riffs from this song and this was our chance to play with some new guitar synth effect toy he'd just gotten and to try to lay down our vision of what the track should have been... it's a bit of a mess. I seem to remember at some point we were trying out my little sisters toys as percussion: I don't think any of those sounds made the cut.

'Don't Go Back' and 'What's Up With You?' were the beginnings of the writing style that would develop eventually into the Kiyomori sound. 'Mothers Sons' and 'Teenage Excess' were the death throes of me trying to write punky rock songs for rift.

'Frank Sinatra' is the original version of the same song which appears on 'From The Bedroom...'. My house-mate Carly told me it was too short, so I re-recorded that epic version but here is the original. Along with the rest of the songs I've not mentioned here it stands as my first writing that was not intended for a specific band. The first writing that didn't really have a purpose other than to express myself, never originally intended for public consumption.
