about

Sketch is a series of demo songs, most of which would go on to be re-recorded with the Adam Kidd Band for an album called 'Looking For Love In Inappropriate' places which we never released. We didn't release it because we didn't have the know how and I had been offered a publishing deal on the proviso we bury it and progress the group, which is what we did and that group became Fragile Creatures.

At this stage although I was writing a lot my computer was no longer up to the task of recording: it had serious latency issues, so anything more than one single track was nearly impossible (although some of my experiments trying to record with this limitation can be found on B2). These songs were recorded on my brothers computer when he wasn't about, as we were both renting rooms in a shared house on Totland Road, Brighton. I used one microphone! I'd record guide acoustic guitar to a click track, move the mic to the drums and play them, then use the same mic for vocals and whatever else I wanted to get on the track. Half the time I didn't have access to my bass guitar (people had a habit of borrowing it and holding onto it: it's got a nice tone my Mexican P-bass) so I would play the bass line on guitar and then pitch it down in Cool Edit Pro. Once I had the audio recorded I could mix at leisure on my own computer.

I played around with other instruments too for this album: whatever was to hand. I played wooden flute on 'Smile', violin on 'Have It Their Way', I believe harmonica on 'Bird In A Cage'. I was just doing my best with minimal equipment and questionable musicianship to create the sound of a live band that was all made up of me! 'Into The Night' is a bit of an exception as I worked more closely with my brother Ben: he played drums and I presume he did some engineering for me, although the shonky end result certainly sounds like one of my mixes! I think by the time we recorded this we'd moved back to Kemptown and were already scheming the Adam Kidd Band recording sessions.

Several of these songs went on to form the basis of early Fragile Creatures shows. This is the first demo of my song 'Fragile Creatures', the song we named the band after! 'Into The Night' and 'Sunshine' also were recorded by Fragile Creatures, so I guess this was a bit of a breakthrough period in my writing.
