about

This is the first collection of bedroom demo songs I compiled into an album's worth of songs. Recorded at Hove Park Road and Goldstone Road, the first two houses I rented after moving out aged 21. I found myself without a band for the first time since I was 14-years-old, and I became determined to teach myself how to record the songs I was imagining in the same way I had learnt the guitar: a stubborn reluctance to accept any help that might speed-up the learning process or improve the results!

The songs were all works in progress and the recordings were used to sort-of finish them, whilst simultaneously creating a number of songs I would never be able to recreate live. I had one cheap microphone. All recorded using the sound editor Cool Edit Pro as a DAW. Effects were processed directly onto each track and drums were created either by sampling and cutting up demo button beats from a Casio home keyboard or on a demo version of Fruity Loops. With the exception of 'Wake Up Tired' when Matthew Twaites came over and we messed about with his drum machine.

Other collaborations included my house mate Loz added some scratching and tones from a pair of DJ decks that were permanently set up in the house; my old Rift bandmates Andy Haines and Tom Alty helping out with 'Better Off', which was a Rift song for our last year as a band; Stephen Hoile from The Mojo Fins playing some bass on 'Seven Stories' (but I'm not sure he'll remember it as he was falling-asleep-drunk at the time); and I recorded Hanna Tuulikki ad-libbing along to 'Frank Sinatra' before cutting the takes up and running them through endless reverbs and delays to create the odd effects. I think she was horrified by the results, but it was nice of her to let me do it.

So this is it: experimental, rudimentary, rough-around the edges, warts-and-all.
